Multiple Studies Squash the Myth of the Bad Women Drivers

For years, there have been jokes about how bad women drivers are. This idea has been bandied about for the past century, becoming the topic of many stand-up comedian routines and sit-com television shows. The truth, however, according to multiple studies, is that men appear to be the poorer drivers, responsible for many more car accidents than women.

Bad Driving Behaviors

Many studies have been done that conclude that male drivers have a higher traffic accident rate than female drivers. One of the main causes for the discrepancy is that males tend to engage in bad driving behaviors, such as speeding, aggressive driving, and driving under the influence, more than women. Male drivers are also more likely not to wear a seat belt.

Statistically, when it comes to bad driving behaviors, the rate of men who engage is higher than women in just about every area:

  • Reckless driving – Men are cited for reckless driving 3.4 times more than women.
  • DUI – Men are cited for driving under the influence 3.09 times more than women.
  • Speeding – Men are cited for speeding almost twice as much as women.
  • Red lights – Men are cited for running red lights 1.53 times more than women.
  • Yield – Men are cited for failure to yield 1.54 times more than women.
  • Seat belts – Men are cited for failing to wear their seat belts three times more than women.

The higher number of bad driving behaviors and violations also shows up in the rate of fatal vehicle accidents. On average, more than 70 percent of all victims killed in traffic accidents are men.

Recent Study

One recent study dug deeper into researching the types of vehicle accidents and what the difference was between female and male drivers. In every category, men posed the higher risk of causing crashes:

  • Cars and vans – Men are twice as likely to cause a crash than women.
  • Tractor-trailers – Men are four times as likely to cause a crash than women.
  • Motorcycles – Men are 10 times as likely to cause a crash than women.

Not only do statistics show that women drivers tend to be better than men drivers, but insurance rates do too. Insurance rates are usually based on the person’s driving history of accidents and violations. On average, females have lower rates than men.

How do I know if I have a case?

The most basic grounds for a case are that you’re hurt and it’s someone else’s fault, legally. There are multiple legal standards that may apply.

Most cases are accidents. The party responsible doesn’t necessarily have to have hurt you on purpose. Simple negligence, which is just an unreasonable absence of care, can be enough for the victim to have the right to compensation. In other words, you might have a case, even if it was an accident.

Ask us for your personal consultation. We can learn about what happened in your case and explain how the law may apply.

How will the value of my case be determined?

The purpose of a personal injury case is to compensate you fairly for the losses that you have suffered. That includes financial losses, plus the physical and emotional suffering that goes along with injuries. The question to answer is – What has the personal injury cost you, financially and personally?

There are other factors that may impact the value of a case. Comparative negligence may apply, for example. Punitive damages may be awarded, subject to statutory limitations and requirements for pretrial motion and hearing to amend the complaint. The legal strength of the case may also impact its value.

At your consultation, we look at your specific case and explain how the value of your case may be determined.

Will I have to go to court for my personal injury case?

Most Personal Injury cases don’t go to court, but we’re always ready just in case. In fact, aggressively preparing your case can be exactly what’s needed to reach a fair settlement. We’re always ready to pursue your interests as long as necessary for you to get justice.

What types of damages can I recover in a personal injury lawsuit?

In a personal injury lawsuit, you can recover damages for the losses you have – financially and personally. You’ll have direct financial losses which may include medical bills, physical therapy, lost wages, and damaged property. You can put in a claim for these expenses.

In addition, when you have a personal injury, you suffer in a lot of ways that can’t be measured directly. For example, you will have physical pain. Injuries may cause mental injury and emotional anguish. Your lifestyle may change. These are real losses, too.
